Correspondence relating to convict paroles, 1916-1943.

"In all cases, except treason and impeachment, the governor has power, after conviction, and not otherwise, to grant reprieves, commutations, paroles and pardons, and to remit fines and forfeitures..." (Ala. Code, Chapter 202, Section 5127 [1923]). This series consists of documents and correspondence sent to the legal advisor to the governor regarding pardons and paroles. Typical records in these files include statements of sentence, letters from convicts requesting parole, correspondence from judges and attorneys in support of the parole or pardon of a criminal, affidavits stating reasons for granting an extension of a temporary parole, petitions supporting the parole of a criminal, and letters from the legal advisor to the governor stating that the governor will either consider granting parole or refusing parole. These records were created during the administrations of Governors Charles Henderson (1915-1919), Bibb Graves (1927-1931 and 1935-1939), Benjamin Meek Miller (1931-1935) and Frank Dixon (1939-1943). This series also contains correspondence regarding juveniles at the Alabama Boys Industrial School.
